A 32-year-old man was killed in a boat accident at a jetty in the Badagry neighborhood of Lagos State.
Two boats, one from Lagos and the other from Badagry, crashed at the jetty on Thursday night, causing the accident.
A resident of the neighborhood named Mr. Victor Idowu told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Badagry that the event happened near a jetty in Akarakumo around 10:05 p.m.
The sound and voice of the boatmen woke up the neighborhood residents, who went outside to find out what had happened.
“One of the passengers fell into the sea after the boat crushed him; the locals assisted in pulling him out with the aid of the boatman.
“When we pulled him from the lagoon, we saw that his chest had been hurt.
Some proposed taking him to private hospitals, but I told them General Hospital should be the finest instead, the man claimed.
Idowu asserted that there was no doctor on duty to treat the victim when they arrived at the hospital.
He claimed that after receiving first aid care, the victim continued to experience discomfort until 4:10 a.m., when they took him away for an X-ray.
He said, “Coming back from the x-ray, he gave up the ghost instantly.
However, the man was brought into the hospital in the middle of the night with a major chest ailment, according to Dr. Olatunde Bakare, Medical Director of the General Hospital in Badagry, who spoke to NAN.
“His two ribs were fractured. We could not handle his case, so we wanted to refer him to another hospital in Lagos.
“However, we realized that if we sent him to Lagos at that time, he might not make it halfway before passing away.
“In order to stabilize him, they had taken an X-ray of him this morning.
The severity of the injuries caused him to pass away as he was emerging, he claimed.
According to Bakare, the patient received the proper care from hospital staff, but his injuries were severe enough to cause his death.
