Charles Chibueze Chukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has recollected how he used to peddle fruits to drivers in Lagos.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, he discussed the meaning behind the album’s title, “Trench to Triumph,” stating that it refers to his background and journey to his current position.
“When I was seven years old, we relocated from Orile Iganmu (Lagos) to a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ flat in Ojo. We shared a room with maybe nine or ten other folks.
Growing up, being the first of my parents’ children, I experienced many financial hardships. Due to unpaid fees, I was frequently sent home from school and ultimately had to retake the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) five times.
At the time, I was assisting my mum at the market where she sold fruits in addition to working on my music. I would occasionally even peddle the fruits to passing cars.
“My victory is that I went from living that kind of life to getting signed by Mavin Records and on my road to becoming a worldwide sensation. I have come out on top after having spent time in the trenches.
