In the Imeko region of Ogun State, some farmers are accused of killing Umaru Aliyu, a herdsman.
The event was confirmed by the Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Monday morning. He said that the four farmers then mutilated the herder’s body for ceremonial use.
In Ogun State’s Imeko-Afon Local Government Area’s Ijagunre village, the police detained the four.
The accused were Akinyele Adebayo, Gbalo Idosu, Abiala Segun, and Kareem Fagbemi Lana, according to Oyeyemi.
He said that they were detained as a result of a police complaint made by one Umaru Jakake, who claimed that while he and his brother Aliyu were grazing their cattle in the aforementioned Ijagunre village, one Ojugbele approached them and warned them not to take their animals close to his land.
According to the complainant, who was cited by Oyeyemi, he and the deceased heeded the advice and moved their cattle to the opposite side of the bush to graze.
But Ojugbele was alleged to have afterwards phoned two additional guys, who he claimed began chasing them through the underbrush.
The complainant said that while he was able to get away, Aliyu’s whereabouts have now come to light.
As a result of the report, the matter that had occurred at the Imeko divisional headquarters was sent, on the Commissioner of Police’s instruction, to the State Criminal Investigation Departments in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for a covert investigation.
Kareem Fagbemi Lana was arrested after an investigation led to the case being given to the SP Kehinde Beyioku-headed homicide branch, according to Oyeyemi.
Lana admitted to the police that Ojugbele had called to warn him that herders were present close to their farms “and that he should come and join him to chase them away.”
He also admitted that Ojugbele also contacted Abiala Segun, who arrived with his dane rifle and the three of them began pursuing the ranchers.
“Kareem Fagbemi Lana gathered the dane gun while pursuing them and killed one of the herdsmen, Umaru Aliyu.
They invited Akinyele Adebayo, whose farm is nearby, and told him about the incident after they had killed the man.
Akinyele Adebayo assisted them in dismembering the body after convincing them that he needed the deceased’s head for a ceremony and they all agreed to let him take it, according to Oyeyemi.
He continued by saying that the suspects afterwards carried the body’s remaining pieces to Tamake town and buried them in front of Gbalo Idosu’s home.
He revealed that the deceased’s head and other body parts were found by the police, who also added that Kareem Fagbemi Lana’s confession resulted in the arrest of three other people while Ojugbele remained at large.
Olanrewaju Oladimeji, the Ogun County Police Commissioner, has issued an order mandating the arrest of the evading Ojugbele and the filing of criminal charges against the detained suspects as soon as the inquiry is complete.
