Chimobi Nwoko, a driver, has been at odds with his employer, simply known as Akazue, since the latter is accused of tricking Nwoko into giving one of his kidneys to Osinachi, his younger brother, and then not paying Nwoko the promised compensation.

Nwoko recounted his trauma on Tuesday, saying that after receiving a kidney transplant on December 22, 2018, at a well-known hospital in Lagos State, Akazue had promised to provide him $20 million, a house, and a driving job in the US. However, Nwoko said that Akazue had broken his word.

The irate guy claimed that before having the transplant, his supervisor had advised him not to tell anyone in his family.

Additionally, he stated that Akazue brought Deborah, his younger sister, to serve as his wife, and that Deborah signed the consent form at the hospital prior to the transplant.

Nwoko claimed that after the transplant and his release from the hospital, his employer had relocated him to a one-room flat in Mowe. He further stated that a week following the procedure, Akazue gave him the go-ahead to resume work even though he was still recovering.

Nwoko described his life after the transplant, saying he is no longer as nimble as he was before and that he is constantly exhausted.

He continued by saying that his family had not given his health any thought since the day he was released.

“In November 2018, I worked as a driver for Mr. Akazue,” Nwoko stated. Osinach, his brother, had a kidney problem, so every three days, I would drive him to the hospital for dialysis while my employer was away. My employer pulled me into his office when he got back and informed me that his brother’s kidney had failed.

“He stated his brother might pass away in the next week or two. He asked whether I would be willing to donate one of my kidneys for his brother, promising to offer me $20 million, an American mansion, and a driving job in return.

After I promised to carry it out, we visited the hospital the following day, where they performed tests and informed me that my kidney would match his. Akazue’s brothers, one of his in-laws, Mr. Joe, and I returned to the hospital the next day, and the surgery was completed after three days.

Nwoko said that he ran out of medication a week after being released from the hospital and that, as a result of Akazue’s abandonment, he had not received any therapy since 2018.

“My supervisor broke every promise he gave me. My supervisor would always assure me not to worry, saying I was still on his mind, whenever I questioned about it. I realised what had happened on October 13, 2023, and I told my parents about it,” Nwoko continued.

In addition, he received a pay rise to N70,000 following the transplant; however, he was never paid in full because N30,000 was withheld each time he missed a workday.

He clarified that on Sunday, October 22, Akazue was taken into custody after his family filed a complaint with the Zone 2 Command, where Assistant-Inspector General Muhammad Ali gave a thorough account of his men.

When asked where Osinachi was, Nwoko’s attorney, Abdullai Dania, replied that Akazue had instructed the police to go look for him on their own.

Referring to Nwoko’s situation as an instance of organ theft, the attorney stated that “his kidney was taken from him deceitfully and fraudulently.”

“This is stealing somebody’s organ,” Dania continued. We’re not sure what method he used to hypnotise the man, but if he wants to resolve the issue, he needs to give the victim N500 million. If he refuses, we’ll pursue legal action while the criminal investigation is ongoing.

Due to a changeover between his two phones, calls attempted to reach Osinachi, the recipient of the donated kidney, were unsuccessful.

Hauwa Idris-Adamu, the Zone 2 Command Public Relations Officer, asked to know which department had made the arrest when she was contacted.
