Accused of stealing from his own mother, man appears in court

Tum Joseph, a 30-year-old man, was charged with stealing a mattress and clothes from his mother on Tuesday at an Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

Theft, causing a disturbance of the peace, and criminal intimidation are the three counts against Joseph.

The defendant’s mother, Bridget, who resides in Ungwan Fari, Kafanchan, reported the incident at the Kafanchan Divisional Police Station on July 7, according to police prosecutor Insp. Esther Bishen, who testified in court.

According to Bishen, the complainant learned that her son had taken several goods from the house while she was attending to her ailing husband at the hospital.

She detailed the stolen items, which included a mattress, two containers of herbicide chemicals, ten yards of wrapping paper, and some of her husband’s clothing.

The mattress was taken from the defendant by the police, according to the police’s testimony in court.

The defendant also disparages and calls his mother names, she continued.

Sections 378, 76, and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law are violated by the offence, according to her.

He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment from the court so that the police could call witnesses to support its case.

The defendant was given bail in the amount of N20,000, along with a surety in the same amount who had to be the defendant’s uncle, according to the order of presiding judge Mr. George Gwani.

He set the hearing date for the subject as September 5.
