Sen. Athan Achonu, the Labour Party’s Governorship Candidate for the Imo State gubernatorial election, has vowed his commitment to the common benefit of the Imo people if elected on Nov. 11.

Achonu made the vow at Amuwo Industrial Estate in Lagos during a town hall meeting with Imo Town Unions, Trade Associations, Professionals, and Ndi Imo citizens.

The meeting’s topic was “Let’s Take Back Imo.”

The Senator was joined by his deputy governorship candidate, Hon. Tony Nwulu, and the Director-General of the Achonu/Nwulu Campaign Organisation, Chime Nzeribe.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on November 11, 2023, Imo voters will have the opportunity to elect a new governor to lead the state’s affairs for another four-year constitutional term commencing Jan. 15, 2024.

Achonu declared that he will devote himself to the growth of the state by establishing sustainable paths.

He went on to say that his administration would use the United Nations Sustainable progress Goals to bring about overall progress for the state and its residents.

“I will create an enabling environment for the state’s security situation to return to normalcy, paving the way for increased investment in Igbo land.”

“My administration will secure the state so that citizens can live and conduct their private businesses freely in pursuit of their individual or collective prosperity,” he stated.

On the economy, the LP gubernatorial candidate stated that he will promote trade and commerce inside Imo and throughout the country through a restoration and rebuilding project.

He went on to say that the plan would aid in modernising the markets and, as a result, provide a more suitable atmosphere for trade activity.

According to him, considering the importance of power as a growth enabler, my administration would declare a power sector emergency.

“Through investments in the power sector and collaboration/partnership with private sector investors, we will improve access to reliable power supply.”

“Through Initiatives, we will aggressively invest in the agricultural sector in order to achieve food security and productive engagement of our citizens.”

“We will also work to fully utilise the exceptional skills and knowledge base of our people wherever they may be, including the diaspora, in the service of their homeland,” he added.

Similarly, Achonu stated that he will conduct reforms in the judicial sector, thereby improving residents’ access to justice and expediting court trials.

He also stated that his administration would ensure the participation and inclusion of women and youth in governance.

On health, Achonu stated that he will provide an expanding healthcare system based on quality primary care that is accessible to all individuals.

In addition, Hon Tony Nwulu, the Labour Party’s Deputy Governorship candidate, stated in his speech that it would be a new dawn in the state if Achonu and the “LP” occupied Douglas House as the new head administration.

According to him, Imo must rise again, as it did under the tenure of the late progressive Governor Sam Mbakwe.

Earlier in his welcome address, Amb. Theo Chibueze, Chief Coordinator, Concerned Imo Influencers, stated that the meeting’s purpose was to rally support for the state’s recovery from the grip of evil wanton devastation of lives and property caused by inept governance.

“Let us join the movement to reclaim Imo from inept administrators who have run the state aground by returning home in large numbers to vote in the November 11 election,” he charged. (NAN)
