A football tournament in Osun turns tragic as a player collapses on the field and dies, leaving the community in mourning.
The Osun State Police Command has verified the unexpected passing of Adeyemi Adewale, a player in a local football tournament held in Osogbo, the state capital.
Adewale, a player for the Ilesa West Local Government football team, reportedly collapsed on the field during a match and was quickly taken to a hospital. Unfortunately, medical staff at the facility pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Osun Police Command spokesperson Yemisi Opalola confirmed the tragic incident in a statement shared with journalists. The event occurred on Thursday during the Adeleke Memorial Cup final match at Ataoja School of Science in Osogbo.
The statement partially read: “Today, Thursday, during the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final at Ataoja School of Science, Adeyemi Adewale (male), aged 29 and a player for the Ilesa West Football team, collapsed on the field. He was taken to Osun State University Teaching Hospital where he was later pronounced dead by a doctor.”
Opalola mentioned that the investigation is still in progress and that the body of the deceased has been placed in the morgue at Osun State University Teaching Hospital.
