A shocking video emerges showing terrorists infiltrating the Syrian President’s palace in Aleppo, raising concerns about escalating security threats in the region.
Newly released video footage reveals jihadist gunmen moving through the halls of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s palace in Aleppo. The insurgents launched a surprise offensive and entered the city on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group and its allied militias launched an attack on government-controlled areas in northern Syria, advancing into Aleppo by Thursday. The Syrian military worked swiftly to regroup and prepare a counteroffensive. By Saturday, the Syrian General Command admitted that dozens of service members had been lost but reported that HTS fighters were unable to establish permanent positions due to constant airstrikes from Syrian and Russian warplanes.
A video allegedly recorded by HTS members and posted on social media on Sunday depicted the militants entering Aleppo’s Presidential Guest Palace. The jihadists were seen exploring dimly lit dining rooms and ascending a marble staircase to access the upper levels of the palace.
The palace seemed to have been vacant prior to the recording of the video. Even though the Syrian government regained control over Aleppo in 2016 and maintained it until this week, Assad frequents multiple residences. At the time of filming, he was meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Damascus, approximately 350 kilometers to the south.
Araghchi promised that Tehran would offer all the necessary assistance to help Assad’s forces overcome the insurgency. “The Syrian army will defeat these terrorist groups once more, as they have in the past,” he stated to Iran’s IRNA state news agency prior to the meeting.
Reports from both pro- and anti-Assad Telegram channels indicate that Iranian military advisers and volunteers arrived in Syria on Saturday. They are assisting the Syrian army in organizing a counteroffensive from Hama, roughly 80 kilometers south of Aleppo.
On Sunday, Syria’s state-run SANA news agency reported that the army had “secured several areas” around Hama and inflicted significant casualties on the terrorist forces, though no further details were provided. The previous day, Syrian officials estimated HTS losses to be around 1,000 fighters.
Prior to adopting its current name in 2017, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was known as Jabhat al-Nusra. This group received indirect support from the US and had previously been backed by Türkiye. During the Syrian Civil War, it emerged as one of the key factions opposing Bashar Assad’s government. In 2015, Russia intervened in the conflict, assisting Assad in reclaiming much of Syria from various groups including Jabhat al-Nusra, Islamic State (IS), formerly ISIS, and a number of armed groups supported by Washington that were labeled as “moderate rebels.”
