Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Gumi endorses President Tinubu’s tax reform bills, describing them as a beneficial plan aimed at improving Nigeria’s economic landscape and citizen welfare.

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a well-known and controversial Islamic cleric, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, stating that they will be advantageous for Nigerians.

In discussing the reforms, Gumi recognized that the bills could enhance the nation’s economy and offer long-term advantages.

He acknowledged public concerns about the Value Added Tax (VAT) aspect of the reform and urged the government to address these issues with transparency.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Gumi remarked, “I think the only aspect that requires reevaluation is the contentious VAT issue; otherwise, it’s a beneficial package for everyone.”

The differing perspectives highlight the ongoing debates regarding how the proposed reforms might impact equity, economic stability, and regional development.

The four tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly have been a major focus of national discussion.

The four bills—the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill—are presently under consideration in both chambers of the National Assembly for approval.

Amid the discussion, the bills have been labeled as anti-North, with critics arguing that they would primarily benefit Lagos and Rivers states.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s spokesman, refuted the allegations and stated that the bills aim to “improve the quality of life for Nigerians, particularly those who are disadvantaged and striving to earn a living.”
