The Deputy Spokesman of the Nigerian House of Representatives claims that proposed tax reforms will help reduce financial strain on the country’s poorest citizens.

Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, stated that President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills are designed to alleviate the burden on impoverished Nigerians and small businesses once they become law.

Since their introduction, the four executive bills have created a conflict between the 36 state governors and the Federal Government. The governors are urging for these bills to be withdrawn to allow for further consultation.

While some governors are reportedly changing their stance on the issue, Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum has urged his northern counterparts to oppose the bills, arguing that their implementation would harm the region’s economy.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Agbese urged Nigerians to support Tinubu’s tax proposals. He emphasized that as lawmakers, the nation’s interests should take precedence over individual or regional concerns.

We anticipate discussing these bills on Tuesday and foresee engaging in thorough deliberations that will eventually result in their approval. The majority of our colleagues have reviewed the bills, leading them to alter their positions. Those who were initially against the bills are now pushing for a swift review and passage.

“When we meet next week, we will have gained even more supporters. However, I want to emphasize that this is not just about lawmakers. These bills are important for all Nigerians—from top company executives to farmers in rural villages—because public policy impacts everyone. If these bills become law, they will revitalize the economy and accelerate the development of essential infrastructure,” he added.

He praised Tinubu for leading a new approach to tax administration in the country, stating that Nigeria is moving towards progressive taxation. He explained that if this system is implemented, it will introduce a fresh tax framework that eases the burden on low-income Nigerians and small businesses. This innovative thinking promises to be beneficial for us.
