Former Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has alleged that Governor Godwin Obaseki cunningly took $300,000 from him. Read the full details of the controversy.

Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, has claimed that during their political switch to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Godwin Obaseki obtained $300,000 from him under deceptive pretenses.

In a recent interview, Shuaibu alleged that Obaseki had asked for the funds, supposedly to lobby party leaders before their defection. However, he later found out that the money was never delivered as promised.

“When the topic of joining PDP arose and there was a question about what benefits PDP would receive, I told him that if securing the deputy position becomes an issue, it shouldn’t hold us back. Let them choose the deputy while you move forward. As long as you’re given the ticket, proceed without hesitation. I sacrificed my stance on this,” Shuaibu explained to The Sun.

He disclosed, “I donated $300,000. He took this amount from me with the claim that he would add it to his own $700,000 for lobbying in Port Harcourt. However, we later discovered from the zonal PDP Chairman that no money was ever given to them.”

“Even I got deceived by him (general laughter). It took me about seven months to repay the money I borrowed. I had to pay in installments just to settle that debt because they claimed it wasn’t put to use as intended, and yet, the funds were never returned. To this day, he hasn’t paid back what was owed. You can ask Chief Dan Orbih and Ogbeide-Ihama; I’m naming names now.”

The rift between Obaseki and Shuaibu intensified as their tenure neared its conclusion, ultimately leading to Shuaibu’s impeachment from his position as deputy governor.
