As tensions rise in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola urges a ceasefire ahead of crucial peace talks with the M23 rebel group.

Angolan President João Lourenço, who is presently the chair of the African Union, has urged for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict within eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Lourenço called on all parties to cease hostilities beginning at midnight local time this Sunday, aiming to foster a peaceful environment for the forthcoming peace talks.

A statement from the Angolan presidency emphasizes that the ceasefire must encompass all acts of hostility towards civilians and stop any efforts to secure new positions within the conflict zone. Discussions are scheduled for March 18 in Luanda, Angola, marking the first meeting between the DRC government and M23 rebels in three years.

The DRC government has not yet officially confirmed its participation. However, the M23 group has shown support for Angola’s peace initiative and is urging President Felix Tshisekedi to openly commit to direct negotiations.

Recently, the conflict has intensified as M23 rebels have taken control of strategic towns in North and South Kivu provinces. This development has displaced thousands of people and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. Despite diplomatic initiatives, violence between the DRC and M23 persists, underscoring an urgent need for dialogue.
