Osun Boy Sentenced to Death Over Alleged Fowl Theft Sparks Outrage

A young man from Osun recounts his experience of being sentenced to death for allegedly stealing a fowl. The case raises questions about justice, fairness, and judicial reforms in Nigeria.

In a story that has both puzzled and angered many Nigerians, an Osun State man—who is colloquially referred to as a ‘boy’ because of his humble origins—has revealed the details behind his startling conviction and death sentence for stealing a chicken. This case has sparked extensive discussions about the fairness of the justice system, especially concerning the severe punishment given for minor crimes in contrast with more serious offenses.

The man, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, participated in an exclusive interview where he shared his experience. He explained that the theft of poultry happened as a desperate attempt to survive due to severe poverty.

“It wasn’t merely about hunger,” he explained. “It was about providing for my younger siblings who hadn’t eaten in days. I understand that stealing is wrong, but I had no other option. What pains me the most is how the system views my desperate act as more criminal than those who embezzle billions from government funds.”

The incident occurred on a scorching afternoon in 2022 when the defendant, who was then an unemployed laborer, faced accusations of stealing a neighbor’s cherished fowl.
