Heartfelt tributes were paid to the victims of the Christmas market attack during a solemn service at Magdeburg Cathedral, uniting the community in grief and solidarity.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to launch an investigation following a tragic incident where a car plowed into crowds at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, including a nine-year-old child.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is attending a memorial service at Magdeburg Cathedral alongside the families of the victims and emergency responders.

According to city officials, the attack has resulted in injuries to over 200 people.

The suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist, reportedly holds “Islamophobic” views according to Germany’s interior minister.

A short while ago, a memorial service at Magdeburg Cathedral concluded for the victims of the Christmas market attack.

Families of the victims, emergency workers, and government officials such as the German chancellor attended the solemn service.

While the service occurred indoors, hundreds gathered outside the cathedral to hold a vigil, laying flowers and candles as tributes to the victims.

Protesters also gathered outside the cathedral, with some carrying signs reading “The blood is on your hands!”
