Tragic End: 37-Year-Old Nigerian Brutally Murdered in South Africa

A 37-year-old Nigerian man met a brutal end in South Africa, sparking outrage and calls for justice from the Nigerian community and beyond.

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has recounted the incident involving Mr. Julius Chukwunta, a 37-year-old man from Enugu State, Nigeria, who was allegedly killed by four individuals from South Africa.

Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, the President-General of NICASA, reported that the incident took place on December 7, 2024, in Midrand Protea Estate. Chukwunta, a resident from Aninri Local Government Area, was driving home when he encountered blockage by the suspects.

“He attempted to get through but encountered resistance, leading him to seek assistance at the estate’s security office,” Onyekwelu explained.

The four individuals reportedly assaulted Chukwunta, causing him severe head injuries. His female companion, who had been in the car with him, found him bleeding upon her return from the security office.

Despite her calls for assistance, both the estate security and the residents failed to help in contacting emergency services. An hour later, Chukwunta’s partner was able to reach her father, who quickly organized with other family members to transport him to Tembisa General Hospital. Tragically, on December 10, 2024, after being placed on life support, Chukwunta passed away due to his injuries.

Onyekwelu confirmed that the incident was reported to the Midrand police station under file number 262/12/2024. He stated that four suspects, aged 20, 24, 27, and 28, were apprehended. The case was brought before Alexandra Magistrate Court on December 13th, 2024, where they faced murder charges.

During the court proceedings on December 18, 2024, three of the suspects were granted bail set at R10,000 each. The fourth suspect had not yet applied for bail. The hearing was rescheduled to February 3, 2025.

Onyekwelu voiced his disappointment with the proceedings and pledged that the Nigerian community would persist in seeking justice for Chukwunta while supporting his family.

He stressed that the community would remain vigilant until justice was achieved and the worth of Nigerian lives was acknowledged in South Africa.
