IGP Orders Investigation into Kogi Boat Mishap, Intensifies Rescue Operations

The Inspector-General of Police has initiated a probe into the tragic Kogi boat mishap and directed intensified rescue efforts to recover missing passengers.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has initiated an investigation into the boat accident in Kogi State.

Many people were feared dead in the accident that occurred on Friday.

In response, the Inspector General of Police instructed the Force Marine Officer to spearhead a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident, according to a statement made by Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday.

The objective is to pinpoint contributing factors and formulate practical strategies to avert similar incidents on the nation’s waterways. Additionally, this investigation will offer insights into enhancing overall safety and emergency response systems for water transport nationwide.

The police chief, who comforted the families of the victims and expressed condolences to the people of Kogi following the boat accident, assured them that their agency is committed to conducting a swift rescue operation for any missing passengers.

The police stated that resources and operational methods have been mobilized to enhance search and rescue operations.

Inspector General of Police Egbetokun urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to collaborate closely with the Force Marine Department in implementing and enforcing essential safety measures to ensure the protection of both passengers and operators.

In the meantime, at least 20 people have been rescued and eight bodies recovered following the tragic boat accident along the Dembo-Ebuchi section of River Niger in Niger State.

Abdullahi Saku, the chairman of Katcha Local Government Area, confirmed the figure to Channels Television while assessing the area.

Saku mentioned that at the time of the accident, the boat was transporting more than 200 passengers, primarily artisans and traders.

Rescue operations continue as efforts are made to recover some of the bodies. At the same time, the community is calling on the Federal government to carry out dredging of the Dembo-Ebuchi section of River Niger up to Baro in order to decrease boat accidents in that region.

In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed numerous boat accidents resulting in the tragic loss of many lives. These incidents have been attributed to various factors, including inadequate regulation and more.
