Gowon Warns: Nigeria Cannot Afford Another Civil War

Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon urges Nigerians to prioritize unity and peace, stating that the country cannot endure the devastation of another civil war.

Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon has expressed his concern regarding the various crises occurring across the nation, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot endure another civil disturbance.

The Nigerian Civil War, occurring from 1967 to 1970, resulted in millions of deaths. During the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, Plateau State, Gowon expressed concern about the current security situation and prayed that Nigeria would not face another civil war.

He stated on Friday, “The multitude of crises we’re experiencing in Nigeria are deeply unsettling. These challenges are ones God knows we shouldn’t be facing following our Civil War.”

“I have expressed my hope and prayed to God that Nigeria does not experience another crisis like the one we’ve been through.”

Gowon, the guest speaker at the event, expressed hope by saying: “Let’s pray to God that we’re starting to see an end to these crises. Pray for God’s guidance in touching the hearts of those inclined towards creating problems.”

Pray for Nigeria, asking God to touch and transform hearts so they may foster peace and well-being among all Nigerians.

Yesterday was a significant day for Plateau State as we united in worship and gratitude at the first-ever Plateau Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival. This event took place at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Doi, located within Jos South Local Government Area.

The inaugural Plateau State Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival began at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, located in Jos South Local Government Area. The event was attended by distinguished Nigerians who have made significant contributions to national peace and unity.

In addition to Gowon, the program was attended by other notable Nigerians such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and past governors of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye and Jonah Jang, along with Boni Haruna from Adamawa State.

Other notable figures included Ambassador Mary Lar, Professor Jerry Gana, retired military officers, and government officials who joined Governor Caleb Mutfwang for the carols and praise festival.
