AGF Declares Illegal Dissolution of LG Councils a Treasonable Offence
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) warns that dissolving local government councils unlawfully is a treasonable offence, stressing legal consequences.
Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, characterized state governors’ unlawful actions to dissolve and assume control of local government administration as a treasonable offense.
Fagbemi mentioned this on Wednesday at the commencement of an event organized by the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja.
Represented by Tijani Gazali, the Director of Civil Appeals in the ministry, the AGF pointed out that despite both a Supreme Court judgment and constitutional provisions designed to prevent state governors from interfering with local government councils’ operations, some governors and their state assemblies persist in dissolving elected local government councils without adhering to constitutional requirements.
He further criticized the Attorney General and state-level Commissioners for Justice, claiming they failed to provide legal counsel to their governors. He suggested imposing strict penalties on any governor who persists in such illegal actions.
