BREAKING: Gov Adeleke Defies FG, Insists Osun LG Elections Will Hold
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has vowed that local government elections will proceed despite federal government opposition, escalating the political standoff.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has confirmed that the local government elections set for Saturday, February 22, 2025, will go ahead as scheduled, despite facing opposition from the Federal Government.
In a statement issued today by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor reassured residents that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has finalized all essential preparations to guarantee a seamless, free, and fair election throughout the state.
Governor Adeleke stressed the state government’s dedication to maintaining democratic values and promoting grassroots representation through elections. He encouraged all eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and peacefully exercise their civic rights.
The announcement occurs in the context of escalating tensions between the Federal Government and Osun State Government. Earlier, Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), called for a suspension of elections due to ongoing legal and political disputes.
“Our people are ready for the elections tomorrow and eager to select their preferred chairmen and councillors,” Adeleke stated while speaking to a delegation of civil society groups overseeing the elections.
He also commended OSSIEC’s readiness and highlighted the involvement of multiple political parties in the process, ensuring a fair competition.
In response to the election controversy, Governor Adeleke emphasized that democracy is guided by the rule of law and cautioned against any efforts to subvert the process.
He advised all parties, including local and national stakeholders, to adhere to democratic principles. He also emphasized that he and his community support the rule of law rather than resorting to illegal self-help methods.
The governor encouraged residents of Osun to maintain peace and expressed hope that the elections would boost development at the grassroots level.
“Osun is genuinely a tranquil state,” Adeleke concluded.
