Former President Donald Trump issues a stern warning to Hamas, vowing severe consequences for the group’s actions, amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has issued a warning that there will be “all hell to pay in the Middle East” if Hamas does not release its remaining Israeli hostages before he takes office. He has urged both Israel and Palestinian militants to resolve their conflict ahead of his inauguration.

Last October, Hamas militants took over 250 hostages during their attack on Israel. In a brief truce the following month, 105 hostages were released and several others have been rescued this year. However, approximately 100 are still thought to be held in Gaza. Hamas has linked their release to an Israeli withdrawal from the enclave—an offer that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declined.

“On Monday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform about the hostages being violently and inhumanely held against the will of everyone worldwide in the Middle East.”

The incoming president announced that “if the hostages are not released before January 20, 2025, when I take office as President of the United States, there will be severe consequences in the Middle East and for those responsible for committing these atrocities against humanity.”

He concluded, “Those responsible will face consequences more severe than anyone has ever experienced in the long and storied history of the United States of America.”

Trump has pledged to resolve several international crises, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, if he returns to the White House. Although he hasn’t detailed his strategies, in the past he’s brought foreign nations into negotiations by threatening force or economic sanctions. For example, before having amicable discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his first term, Trump warned Pyongyang of “fire and fury like never seen.”

Before winning last month’s presidential election, Trump allegedly told Netanyahu that he wants Israel’s conflict with Hamas resolved before inauguration day. Although Trump has not confirmed making these remarks to Netanyahu, he has publicly urged Israel to “finish up your war” several times this year.

In an interview with Axios on Friday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that Trump is “more determined than ever to release the hostages and backs a ceasefire contingent on a hostage agreement.” As a proponent of assertive foreign policy, Graham clarified that Trump’s objective is to secure an arrangement regarding Gaza in order to concentrate on other priorities such as advancing Israeli-Saudi relations normalization and forming a regional alliance against Iran.
