Tinubu Approves Establishment of Environmental University in Ogoni

President Tinubu has approved the creation of an Environmental University in Ogoni, aimed at addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainable development in the region.

On Monday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu enacted legislation to create the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) located in Ogoni, Rivers State. He also promised increased support for the community.

According to a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for the President, Tai’s Ogoni town will be home to the university.

During the signing ceremony at the State House, President Tinubu stated that establishing the university would further empower Ogoni citizens and offer more opportunities for participation and development.

“The President stated that the Ogoni people have led our development and advocacy, enduring significant environmental harm.”

For decades, the Ogoni people have led efforts in advocating for environmental restoration and sustainable development, influencing both national and global discussions on these crucial matters.

He stated that by enacting this bill into law, a decisive step is being taken to address historical grievances and create new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity.

The President confirmed that the university will “act as a center of excellence, providing young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills necessary to address current environmental challenges, promote clean energy solutions, and support our nation’s sustainable economic development.”

Tinubu expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, especially acknowledging the leadership of both the Senate and House of Representatives, for their thoughtful consideration of the bill.

The President stated, “We will work together to ensure that it not only fulfills its mandate but also becomes a catalyst for transformational development throughout the country.”

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, was quoted saying that the University will emphasize interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology to prepare students for addressing regional and national ecological challenges.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, additionally mentioned that founding the university will tackle enduring concerns and contribute to efforts aimed at restoring Ogoniland.

Ribadu emphasized the importance of prioritizing inclusive development and environmental sustainability in Ogoniland.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, who leads the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to the President for signing into law the bill that establishes the Federal University of Environment and Technology.

He also acknowledged the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in aiding the bill’s passage.

Barinada mentioned that founding a university would act as a symbol of hope for the Ogoni community, encouraging people to “put down their swords” and pursue peace.
