State of Emergency: Why Rivers People Shouldn’t Protest – Mark Angel
Popular comedian Mark Angel urges Rivers residents to remain calm and avoid protests amid the ongoing political crisis and state of emergency.
Comedian Mark Angel has called on the residents of Rivers State to refrain from opposing the State of Emergency that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has imposed in the region.
In a nationwide address on Tuesday, President Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs for a period of six months.
In response, Mark Angel shared a video on his Instagram page, expressing concerns about plans by certain groups to organize a statewide protest against Governor Fubara’s suspension. He urged the residents to avoid participating in such demonstrations.
He emphasized that the conflict is between the governor and the Federal Government, rather than involving the people of Rivers State.
The comedian stated, “My fellow citizens of Rivers State, particularly the youth, the ongoing situation in our state does not concern you. It is a dispute between governments.
“The government claims to have an agreement with another government, and one side has betrayed the other. This is a personal conflict. Since they possess the authority to make changes, let them do so. It is important to understand that this struggle is not yours.
“We anticipated this in our skits, but many dismissed it as a joke, and now it is unfolding. Allow them to resolve their issues. Even if they decide to have military rule for a decade, that is acceptable as long as we can continue our daily lives in peace. Do not engage in someone else’s battle. We all know how the Governor, for whom we are being urged to protest, came into power. Let them resolve their differences without your involvement.
“Do not let anyone persuade you to join any protests. There is no such thing as ‘We will not agree.’ That is false; we agree. They know what they did to attain power, and they are aware of what they must do to maintain it.”
