On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the atmosphere at Abuja’s iconic Eagle Square was somber and contemplative as Nigeria paused to honor the unparalleled patriotism and sacrifices of its fallen heroes during the Armed Forces’ Remembrance Day.

Nigeria is now 64 years post-independence, thanks to the sacrifices of countless brave soldiers who gave their lives defending the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Vice President Kashim Shettima stood in for President Bola Tinubu, who was away participating in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the UAE. In addition to Shettima, several cabinet members attended to pay tribute to fallen heroes and their families by laying wreaths as part of various military rituals, including a gun salute.

The occasion was attended by ministers, high-ranking government and military officials, members of the diplomatic corps, widows of brave officers, and spouses of military personnel.

In a previous statement, the Senate praised the military for their selfless sacrifices. The upper legislative chamber also recognized “serving officers and soldiers who are presently upholding peace and ensuring our nation’s security from both internal and external threats.”
