Mohbad’s Wife and Father Clash Over DNA Test

The late singer Mohbad’s wife and father engage in a heated dispute over a DNA test, raising tensions and concerns about the singer’s legacy and family dynamics.

Omowunmi, the widow of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad, has alleged that her husband’s father, Joseph Aloba, is avoiding taking a DNA test to settle the ongoing paternity dispute concerning her son with Mohbad.

The controversy intensified after a ruling by the Magistrates Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State on July 9, 2024. The court instructed both parties to pursue Alternative Dispute Resolution. However, despite private negotiations, they were unable to reach an agreement.

Joseph Aloba filed a legal suit requesting a DNA test to verify his grandson’s paternity. In October 2024, Monisola Odumosu, representing the family’s legal team, announced that Omowunmi consented to the DNA test and both parties had created settlement terms.

The court additionally mandated that the test should be carried out at a laboratory or medical center in Nigeria, as agreed upon by all parties involved.

To guarantee the test’s reliability, the court appointed additional officers to oversee the DNA testing process.

A letter from Salawu Akingbolu Chambers, Omowunmi’s legal representatives, signed by Kabir Akingbolu and dated January 9, 2025, mentioned that Omowunmi acknowledged refusing the choice of UCH Ibadan made by Mohbad’s father. Additionally, she stated he refused her preferred option of Lagoon Hospitals.

Omowunmi mentioned that they proposed The Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals to ensure transparency, as outlined in their letter dated December 11, 2024. However, Mohbad’s father did not reply.

The letter stated, “We continue to represent the Respondent in the mentioned case and have her explicit permission to send you this correspondence.”

As you may recall, we have exchanged multiple letters regarding this matter, but unfortunately, no progress has been made. It is disappointing to note that after responding promptly to your letter dated December 5, 2024—which we received and acknowledged on December 9—we are still awaiting a response from you.

While we objected to your selection of UCH Ibadan, it was because the court itself noted for valid reasons that it’s inappropriate after your client mentioned it in open court.

Similarly, we have decided to accommodate your objection to our use of Lagoon Hospitals, despite the absence of any substantial reasons provided.

Reasonably, we selected two other hospitals for replacement: The Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals. This decision was made to demonstrate transparency, as stated in our letter dated December 11, 2024.

Omowunmi mentioned that, to her surprise, Mohbad’s father’s lawyer took to social media accusing her of being unprepared for the DNA test.

“To our complete surprise, instead of receiving a response from you to our letter dated as mentioned above, we noticed Mr. Taiwo Odumosu—whom we hold in high regard and is the counsel for the Applicant—making statements on social media claiming that it’s us who are unprepared for the DNA test. This assertion is inaccurate, and through this letter, we firmly reject any misrepresentation conveyed by Mr. Odumosu on social platforms. In fact, such unfounded allegations warrant an apology,” the letter stated.

She also expressed disappointment that Mohbad’s father defamed her son on social media.

The letter went on to state: “It is deeply unfortunate that we observed the Applicant engaged in defamatory behavior against Master Liam on social media approximately three weeks ago. He portrayed him as illegitimate, which is entirely unacceptable—particularly given that the court had instructed him to complete a DNA test he now seems surprisingly reluctant to undertake, presenting an irreconcilable irony. It’s quite laughable.”

Omowunmi warned that she would proceed with conducting the DNA test on her own if Mohbad’s father persisted in postponing the issue.

“We request that you promptly take action or advise your client to do whatever is necessary to ensure the DNA process proceeds on schedule, allowing us to make progress. However, if your client persists in delaying and opts for unproductive social media attention instead, we will have no choice but to conduct the DNA test ourselves and share the results publicly. We intend to inform the court of our stance on this matter,” stated the letter.

In a response from Hillceetee Partners dated January 11, 2025, and signed by Emmanuel Oroko, Mohbad’s father refuted the allegations. He also mentioned that Taiwo Odumosu never claimed in any media interview that Omowunmi was unwilling to undergo the DNA test.

We have presented your letter dated January 9, 2025, with the aforementioned subject to Mr. Taiwo Odumosu. Following his guidance, we are responding as follows:

Mr. Odumosu wants to clarify that at no point during his media interaction did he state that your client “was not ready for the DNA.” What he actually conveyed, which seems to have been misunderstood, was that the hospitals had yet to respond regarding their readiness to conduct the test. After this media interaction, we heard your client’s reaction reflecting similar sentiments.

Mr. Odumosu holds the utmost respect for your office and your client. He would not undermine in any way the professionalism and maturity that both law firms have demonstrated throughout this case.

Oroko, however, stated in the letter that their firm would no longer represent Mohbad’s father in this case.

“The letter stated that this response is essential as a courtesy to you and to clarify the situation, since our chambers no longer represent the Applicant.”
