Road accidents claimed the lives of 5,081 individuals in Nigeria in 2023

The countrywide number of fatalities from road traffic crashes (RTCs) in 2023 was 5,081, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

After accounting for 6,456 road traffic fatalities in 2022, this number shows a 21% decrease.

On Monday in Abuja, at a press conference to commemorate the conclusion of the Corps’ statewide Operation Zero Tolerance, Corps Marshal Dauda Ali-Biu revealed this.

The reduction in RTCs by 21%, in his opinion, was the result of the Corps implementing a complete strategy.

The Corps guaranteed upward mobility in the mobilisation of human and material resources to achieve maximum impact, according to Ali-Biu, from January to December 2023.

In terms of annual performance, the Corps saw a significant decrease in traffic accidents, fatalities, and injuries from January to December 2023 as compared to data from 2022.

Between January 1 and December 31, 2023, 10,617 RTCs were reported nationwide. This amount is in contrast to 13,656 in 2022, a fall of 22%.

Additionally, according to records from 2023, 5,081 individuals died compared to 6,456 in 2022, a 21% decrease, and 31,874 people were injured compared to 38,930 in 2022, an 18.1% decrease, the speaker stated.

Despite the decline, the head of the FRSC stated that the number of RTCs and related fatalities remained unacceptable.

Regarding the enforcement of traffic offences, Ali-Biu said that 93 special mobile court sessions held nationwide resulted in the conviction of 1,159 drivers.
