Kwara Man Dies in Police Custody: IGP Orders Immediate Investigation

The Inspector General of Police has directed a thorough investigation into the death of a Kwara man in police custody. Justice and accountability are being sought.

According to the Kwara State Police Command, a 35-year-old man named Jimoh Abdulquadri has died while in police custody.

Abdulquadri, who passed away early on Friday morning, was reportedly arrested by police officers on December 19th, 2024.

It was also reported that the deceased allegedly owed N220,000 to someone named Peter, which resulted in his detention.

The family of the deceased has accused police officers at the state police command headquarters of brutalizing Abdulquadri while he was in their custody.

In response on Sunday, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun instructed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to immediately assume responsibility for the investigation.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP also visited Kwara State to meet with the bereaved family of the deceased and promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding their death.

The Inspector General of Police was welcomed by Alhaji Sadiq Atiku Fulani, the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, who represented the family. In their meeting, the IGP conveyed his sincere condolences and promised that every effort would be made to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

“The IGP has directed the FCID to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into the case, emphasizing diligence in their efforts. He also assured both the family and general public that the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to maintaining top standards of accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights,” according to another part of the statement.

The IGP urged all stakeholders to stay calm and let the legal process take its course.
