Peter Obi has made a surprising U-turn, indicating a coalition could be a possibility for the 2027 elections. Learn more about this shift and its potential impact on Nigeria’s political future.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has clarified his position on forming a coalition for the 2027 general elections. He expressed openness to collaborating with political groups that share similar values and goals.

In a statement posted on his X account (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday, Obi stressed that he is still willing to form coalitions focused on the well-being and advancement of everyday Nigerians.

This clarification comes after previous reports indicated that Obi had turned down coalition initiatives led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures. Obi stated that he would not endorse any alliance motivated by a desire for power.

He wrote, “I’ve noticed that my straightforward interview from yesterday has been misquoted by various media outlets, leading to a misleading narrative about my stance. Let me clarify: I am not opposed to coalition. In fact, I support it—not as a means of seizing power but rather as an opportunity to steer Nigeria towards greatness.”

I have not, and will never support any coalition or alliance that does not prioritize the welfare and progress of the average Nigerian.

Any conversation about governance should focus on its impact on everyday Nigerians and how it will tackle essential issues like providing access to quality healthcare and education, as well as alleviating poverty.

Throughout our nation’s history, there have been numerous instances where individuals and groups unite solely to seize power for its own sake. These efforts, lacking authentic purpose or vision, have only exacerbated our challenges and placed the burden of poor governance on ordinary Nigerians. I am firmly opposed to this approach.

Leadership should prioritize service over self-interest. As I’ve consistently stated, a New Nigeria is achievable.

However, it necessitates a shift in our perspective on power. It’s not about seizing control; instead, it’s about wielding it responsibly to change lives and ensure a better future for generations ahead.

Obi secured the third position in the 2023 presidential election.
