Peter Obi claims that Nigeria has more ‘Yahoo people’ (fraudsters) in government than outside, sparking debates on corruption and governance in the country.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has voiced criticism of the current administration. He asserts that government institutions are plagued by corruption to a greater extent than external entities.

Obi shared these insights during his keynote speech at Nexford University’s fourth graduation ceremony. Addressing the attendees with a focus on the event’s theme, “Lead the Change; Ignite Your Future,” he remarked, “When it comes to governance and vices, it’s not just about internet fraudsters. In fact, there are more dishonest individuals within government than outside of it because our entire nation has become rife with crime—both from those in power and those beyond.”

He stressed the importance of having capable leaders to guide the country away from corruption and urged graduates to act as catalysts for positive change in their communities. “It’s about leadership and shaping the future. While it’s not rocket science, it is challenging. It requires a strong character and resisting wrongdoing,” he stated.

Encouraging the graduates to use their education for societal betterment, Obi stated: “Utilize your knowledge to aid in transforming society. You are affected by Nigeria’s current state because our generation and those before us have failed to make the right choices, leading to your present challenges.”

At the event, former Minister of Solid Minerals Obiageli Ezekwesili highlighted the importance of service as a fundamental aspect of leadership. She encouraged graduates to commit to meaningful service in their careers and within society. “Service is the essence of true leadership. We hope you view graduation as an opportunity for serving your work,” she stated.

Fadl Al Tarzi, the founder of Nexford University, announced that more than 1,200 students received their bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the graduation ceremony. He highlighted the university’s dedication to utilizing technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve educational experiences.

“We have incorporated AI into all our courses across every program,” remarked Al Tarzi. “AI has the ability to enhance productivity and tackle challenges that might otherwise take years to overcome.” He also highlighted AI’s potential to link Nigerian talent with global opportunities, thereby fueling economic growth.
