The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) shares the latest developments on the Kaduna and Second Port Harcourt refineries, including ongoing repairs and expected timelines for full operations.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has revealed that extensive overhauls are underway for the Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day (bpd), as well as the Kaduna Refinery. These efforts aim to bring both facilities up to global standards.

The company explained that the rehabilitation efforts at both the Port Harcourt Refinery, with a 60,000 bpd capacity, and the Warri Refinery are more extensive than standard Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) procedures. These comprehensive overhauls aim to meet international best practices.

Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., released a statement addressing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments about the operational status of the upgraded 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery.

Obasanjo had earlier expressed doubts about the operational viability of these refineries, questioning their effectiveness and accusing NNPC Ltd. of deceiving the public regarding their status.

In response, Soneye pointed out that the renovation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries marked a major achievement for NNPC Ltd. He noted similar initiatives are underway at both the second Port Harcourt refinery and Kaduna refinery. Soneye stressed that NNPC Ltd. is dedicated to maintaining global standards in refining maintenance and enhancement efforts to secure long-term operational sustainability.

Soneye also invited the former President to visit the renovated refineries and witness the progress personally. He praised Obasanjo for his significant contributions to national development and emphasized how valuable his insights are.

“We invite our esteemed former president to be part of this historic journey with us,” Soneye stated. “His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we truly appreciate his insights and guidance, which will always be welcomed and cherished. We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a respected statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s growth and progress. His dedication to national development and his right to voice opinions on important national issues are both profoundly respected.”

He highlighted how the company has transcended its traditional oil and gas operations to evolve into a fully integrated energy organization. Now, NNPC Ltd.’s focus extends beyond conventional resources to include cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable energy solutions designed to meet Nigeria’s increasing demands.

Soneye concluded that the advancements have been fueled by the visionary leadership of NNPC Limited’s board and management team, under GCEO Mele Kyari, in conjunction with President Bola Tinubu’s transformative energy sector policies.
