Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), has given an update regarding the tragic tanker explosion that took place in Diko, Niger State.

As of noon on January 20, 2025, the death toll has increased to 98, and there are reports of injuries affecting 69 individuals.

The explosion additionally resulted in 20 shops being completely destroyed by fire, leading to substantial losses for business owners in the vicinity.

In a statement released by Baba-Arah, he characterized the incident as a devastating tragedy that has plunged the state into mourning.

He confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency responders diligently working to provide adequate medical attention for the injured and recover the bodies of those who lost their lives.

“We are profoundly saddened by this unfortunate event. The state government and NSEMA are dedicated to assisting the victims and ensuring that those injured receive the necessary care.”
