The United Nations Security Council has postponed the vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas for the third time.
The delay is due to disagreements among council members over the wording of the resolution. The vote is now scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is in Cairo for talks aimed at brokering a new truce. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has also expressed readiness for a humanitarian pause and additional aid to facilitate the release of hostages.
The UN’s World Food Programme has delivered food to Gaza through the Israeli Kerem Shalom border crossing, marking the first direct aid convoy from Jordan. In Gaza, residents of Khan Younis have reported escalating gun battles between Hamas fighters and Israeli forces in the central and eastern districts of the city.
Israeli officials claim that 1,139 people, including 695 Israeli civilians and 36 children, were killed in the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel. The health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave estimates that at least 20,000 people have been killed in Israel’s subsequent assault on the Gaza Strip.
