The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has sanctioned five airlines for flight cancellations and other operational lapses, aiming to ensure better compliance with aviation standards.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has begun enforcement actions against five airlines—comprising two international and three domestic operators—for multiple breaches of Part 19 of the NCAA regulations.

The violations include failing to pay refunds within the designated time frame, not responding to NCAA directives, issues with missing and mishandled luggage, short-landed baggage, as well as delayed and canceled flights, among other concerns.

Michael Achimugu, a spokesman for the NCAA, revealed this to journalists at the Authority’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

He mentioned that while airlines aren’t always at fault for flight disruptions, NCAA regulations require them to take specific actions in such events. Non-compliance can result in various sanctions.

Remember that the Authority recently issued a warning, stating it will impose sanctions if airlines do not provide refunds within 14 days for online ticket purchases and offer immediate cash refunds for tickets bought with cash.

The continuous disruptions during this holiday season have led to a significant increase in passenger complaints regarding delays and cancellations. Achimugu defended the airlines concerning most of these cancellations.

“We’re all aware that it’s harmattan season, which leads to poor visibility and flight cancellations. In these circumstances of force majeure, airlines are not obligated to compensate passengers. The enforcement we’re launching today focuses on situations where the airline is found at fault. There will be more actions like this,” explained the spokesman.

He also confirmed that the Authority will summon all airline chief executives to a meeting this week regarding flight disruptions and regulatory violations.

Although Achimugu did not reveal the names of the airlines for which he authorized sanctions today, sources familiar with the Authority revealed that they include Ethiopian Airways, Royal Maroc Airways, Arik Air, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace.
