Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering a prominent CEO, as his trial begins in a high-profile case.

Luigi Mangione entered a plea of not guilty in a New York court on Monday, regarding the murder charge of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione is facing several state and federal charges, including first-degree murder carried out as an act of terrorism. If convicted on all counts, he may face the death penalty.

“In essence, this killing was meant to instill fear,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated last week.

Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, contended that her client was “being unfairly affected by certain remarks from government officials.” She accused New York Mayor Eric Adams and the police of exploiting Mangione as “political fodder.”

Thompson was fatally shot in front of a Manhattan hotel on December 4. At the scene, investigators discovered shell casings and bullets inscribed with the words “deny,” “depose,” and “delay.” These inscriptions seemingly alluded to the practice of rejecting health insurance claims by clients.

Several days later, Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altona, Pennsylvania when a customer identified him from police-released images. According to the NYPD, Mangione had in his possession a gun and suppressor “consistent with the weapon used in the murder.”

A manifesto linked to Mangione and circulated by the media condemns UnitedHealth and the entire American healthcare system, describing them as plagued with “corruption and greed.”

The case has rekindled public discussion about the exploitative behaviors of health insurers in the US and their impact on patients. Some officials have voiced concerns regarding the praise and sympathy Mangione has garnered on social media.
