Tension escalated in Kano state on Sunday, April 14, regarding the purported intention to prosecute the former governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The conflicting stances taken by supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have intensified the political atmosphere in the northwestern state, especially as the APC national chairman is rumored to be facing charges alongside his family members.

The High Court in the state has officially summoned Ganduje, his spouse, and six others on allegations of financial misconduct during his eight-year tenure as governor.

The NNPP-led government in the state has established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate Ganduje’s two terms, citing accusations of financial mismanagement and abuse of power.

The ongoing legal proceedings have become a focal point of political discourse on local radio stations and social media platforms in the state. While some are advocating for prudence, others are vehemently issuing threats, creating a tense environment.

The repercussions of the court’s actions seem to have overshadowed the festive spirit of the Salah celebration in the historic city, with concerns rising about a potential security crisis stemming from the political turmoil.

Governor Abba Yusuf has emphasized that the Commission of Inquiry was not formed to target any specific political opponent, although he has consistently expressed his commitment to holding Ganduje accountable.

Despite the escalating tensions, some residents are urging for peace and reconciliation rather than further animosity.

A resident of Hotoro, Yakubu Isa, highlighted the inopportune timing of the political conflict and emphasized the need to avoid instigating a divisive political war, especially considering religious teachings against such actions.

Tanimu Auwalu of Rijiyallemo advised Governor Abba Yusuf to focus on governance to fulfill his electoral mandate effectively.
