Israeli Forces Open Fire on Protesters in Syrian Border Village, One Injured”
An incident at the Syrian-Israeli border turns violent as Israeli forces reportedly fire at protesters, leaving one person wounded.
On Friday, the Israeli military reported that its forces had shot and injured a protester who was demonstrating against the army’s presence in a border village located in southern Syria.
Maariyah is located near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, just beyond the demilitarized buffer zone created by a 1974 ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
On Friday, a group of people assembled in the village to call for an end to the Israeli military presence.
According to residents, Israel has established a position at an abandoned Syrian army base in the area and is blocking farmers from reaching their fields.
“Village headman Abdulraouf Abu Zalfa urged the United Nations to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian areas in Maariyah village, citing the 1974 agreement between Syria and Israel.”
Following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last weekend, Israel has conducted hundreds of air strikes on Syria.
In a move that faced widespread international condemnation, it additionally deployed troops into the United Nations-patrolled buffer zone, capturing a portion of southern Syria.
Critics have alleged that Israel has breached the 1974 ceasefire and might be taking advantage of the turmoil in Syria following Assad’s removal to seize territory.
Israel has characterized the action as a temporary defensive measure aimed at securing its northern border.
On Thursday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Israel should cease its airstrikes on Syria, describing these actions as breaches of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In the 1967 Middle East war, Israel gained control of the Golan Heights from Syria and subsequently annexed it. This action has not been recognized by most of the international community.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday that Israeli forces will remain until a new arrangement is established “that ensures Israel’s security.”
