Hospital reports that Pele’s cancer has progressed
The 82-year-old Brazilian legend Pele is being treated at a hospital, where officials say his cancer has progressed.
The three-time World Cup champion has spent somewhat more than three weeks in the hospital.
On social media, his daughter announced that he would spend Christmas in the hospital.
The Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein says that Pele “presents malignant disease progression and needs more treatment because of renal and cardiac dysfunctions.”
Pele had surgery to remove a colon tumor in September 2021, and he has been getting care ever since.
Kely Nascimento, the daughter of Pele, posted on Instagram, “Our Christmas at home has been delayed.”
For a variety of reasons, we decided with the doctors that it would be best for us to stay here with all of the care that this new family at Einstein provides us.
Pele had an “excellent reaction to treatment for respiratory infection care,” according to the hospital in Sao Paulo, which also noted that he was having his chemotherapy treatment “reassessed.”
Pele has scored 77 goals in 92 games, making him his nation’s all-time best scorer. He also assisted his nation in winning the World Cup in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
After beating South Korea in the 16th round of the 2022 World Cup, Brazil’s players paid tribute to Pele by holding up a banner with his name and picture on it.
