Having Governorship Ambition Isn’t a Sin – Obasa
Lagos Assembly Speaker, Obasa, defends his governorship ambition, stating that aspiring for leadership is not a wrongdoing but a step toward service and progress.
Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly currently facing challenges, stated that aspiring to become governor of Lagos in 2027 is not wrong.
At a press briefing held at his residence in the GRA area of Ikeja, Lagos capital, on Saturday, Obasa challenged any state leader to inform Lagosians about when and where he expressed a desire to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Obasa stated, “Aspiring to be a governor is not wrong. While I mentioned during the budget presentation at the house that I wasn’t considering governorship, it doesn’t imply I’m unqualified or inexperienced, and my stance remains unchanged.”
“I remain the speaker until due process is followed,” he stated, criticizing the use of military force at the assembly complex during his impeachment. He added that his ousting as speaker occurred while he was outside Nigeria.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, Obasa was ousted from his position as the Lagos speaker after over two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted against him due to alleged misconduct and various offenses.

Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was promptly elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic moment as she became the first woman to lead the legislative body in this South-West state.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was initially elected to the House in 2007. He has been serving continuously ever since. In June 2015, he became the speaker but was removed from this position in January 2025.
