A tragic incident on the Takum-Wukari road as gunmen kill a lecturer, deputy registrar, and 6 others in a brutal attack.

A group of gunmen brutally attacked a vehicle on the Takum-Wukari road during the early hours of Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of a lecturer from Federal University Wukari and deputy registrar from Taraba State School Health Technology. Additionally, six other travelers also lost their lives during this heinous incident.

The assault took place in the town of Sai, which is situated on the border between Benue State and Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.

John Ali, Chairman of the Takum Council, has confirmed the attack and displayed grave concern over the ongoing violence in the region.

Travelers on the Takum-Wukari Express Road face growing peril, as past ambushes – including one that claimed the lives of Chanchanji’s traditional leader and his son – have earned it a dangerous reputation.

Ali reported that the victims embarked on their journey from Takum at 6:00 am in Taraba, disregarding previous advisories issued by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) against early morning travel due to potential security hazards.

The assailants appeared from the nearby bushes and started shooting as soon as they spotted Sai’s vehicle. Tragically, everyone in the car – passengers and driver alike – lost their lives to this sudden attack.

Security agencies were notified and given specific instructions by Ali to retrieve the bodies and pursue those who carried out the attack.

In addition, he pointed out that the Governor had formed a patrol squad after the Chanchanji leader’s murder. The team was ready to be dispatched when an assault took place at approximately 6:00-6:30 am, mere moments before they were supposed to begin their daily rounds.

Although previous discussions were conducted with NURTW and other unions to discourage travel on the route in the early morning, this advice was not adhered to in this instance. As a result, it resulted in a tragic assault.

Ali guaranteed that the government is devoted to securing justice for those responsible and averting similar occurrences in the coming days.
