Guardiola Reacts to ‘Sacked in the Morning’ Chants at Anfield: ‘I Didn’t Expect That’

Pep Guardiola expresses surprise over the “sacked in the morning” chants directed at him by Liverpool fans during Manchester City’s visit to Anfield.

In the 89th minute, as chants filled Anfield, Liverpool were on the verge of securing a victory that would put them 11 points ahead of their title rivals Manchester City.

They were aimed at Pep Guardiola, the genius responsible for six Premier League title victories since he took over leadership of City in 2016.

The City manager, positioned in his technical area, smiled before removing his hands from his pockets and raising one hand with a single finger to show the number of titles City has secured during his tenure.

“I wasn’t anticipating that at Anfield,” Guardiola remarked to Sky Sports afterward when asked about the “sacked in the morning” chants.

I didn’t expect it from the people of Liverpool, but it’s fine. It’s part of the game, and I completely understand.

We’ve shared some incredible battles, and I have a deep respect for them.

City, currently positioned fifth in the standings behind Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Brighton by the weekend’s end, have experienced their first string of four consecutive top-flight losses since August 2008.

Furthermore, they have gone seven matches without a victory across all competitions – an unprecedented situation under Guardiola, who has delivered immense joy and success to City over the past eight years.

“All the stadiums want to see me leave, starting with Brighton on November 9,” noted the 53-year-old, who just signed a new two-year contract extension last month.

Perhaps they are correct given the results we’ve been seeing.

During his tenure at City, Guardiola has also secured one Champions League title, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup.

John Murray, BBC Radio 5 Live’s chief football correspondent present at Anfield, noted that after the final whistle Guardiola also gestured with a number six in front of City’s traveling fans.

Murray added, “Pep is in front of the City fans again, raising one hand and pointing a finger upward.”

Those are the six titles he’s referring to. It’s as if he’s reminding us, “Remember what we’ve accomplished.”
