Governor Uba Sani has reinstated the Chief of Piriga, previously sacked by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in a move aimed at reconciliation.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has reappointed Mr. Jonathan Paragua Zamuna as the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom in Lere local government, adhering to a ruling by the Industrial Court in Kaduna.

The monarch was dismissed by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s administration shortly before the end of their tenure. This action followed recommendations from the state Ministry of Local Government Affairs, which based its decision on section 11 of the Traditional Institutions Law No 21 enacted in 2021.

Dissatisfied with his dismissal, the embattled chief sought redress from the National Industrial Court.

On June 14, 2024, the court invalidated Zamuna’s removal and deposition as Chief of Piriga, declaring that the action “is null and void.”

It also issued an order reinstating the claimant to his position as Chief of Piriga Chiefdom, along with all salaries, allowances, entitlements, and benefits associated with the office.

Speaking at the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Wednesday, prior to presenting Zamuna with his appointment letter, Governor Sani emphasized that his administration is committed to upholding the rule of law, due process, and justice.

Governor Sani congratulated the new Chief on his reinstatement and advised him to ensure equal treatment for everyone in his Chiefdom, avoiding any ethno-religious discrimination.

The Governor stated that his administration provides equal opportunities for all citizens and encouraged Chief Zamuna to do the same. He added that although God created people differently, placing them in the same geographic location is part of His plan.

“I’m confident that you’ve had the opportunity to reflect on the past. Lessons from our experiences enhance our strength and leadership abilities. You now have a unique chance to serve your people with dedication, courage, and compassion,” he remarked.

He posed rhetorical questions, inquiring if “our actions promoted peace and understanding or intensified divisions within our State. Moving forward, what steps must we take as individuals, leaders, or groups to maintain the current peace in Kaduna State?”

“Our administration is committed to the rule of law, due process, and justice. That’s why we promptly adhered to the Kaduna State Industrial Court’s ruling on reinstating the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom,” he stated.
