Many Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn the loss, with messages of sympathy and respect for her impactful life.

Edna Ibru (née Park), a former Miss Nigeria and past First Lady of Delta State, has passed away in London following a brief illness. She was in her 80s.

In 1964, Mrs. Ibru became the first Nigerian and African to make history by being crowned Miss Nigeria and representing the country at the Miss Universe competition.

She later married Olorogun Felix Ibru, the inaugural civilian governor of Delta State from 1991 to 1992. Together, they had two children.

Her son, Dr. Paul Ibru, announced her passing on behalf of the Ibru family from the Agbarha-Otor Kingdom in Delta State through a formal statement.

The announcement, issued in Warri on Saturday, stated: “Our beloved mother peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, following a short illness.”

Before her passing, she was vibrant and full of life. Her sudden departure took us by surprise, but we must accept the divine plan for her cherished existence. She had a deep love for people, served as a mediator and mother figure to many, possessed an outrageous sense of humor, showed immense care for others, remained humble at heart while always having stories to share. We will miss her dearly.

The family mentioned that the details of the burial arrangements would be shared at a later time.
