South Sudan Police Enforce Nationwide Nighttime Curfew Following Deadly Riots

In response to recent deadly riots, South Sudanese police have imposed a nationwide nighttime curfew to restore order and ensure public safety.

Following deadly rioting in Juba, police in South Sudan have implemented a nationwide nighttime curfew starting on Friday.

Three people lost their lives and seven others were injured during protests late on Thursday when youths targeted shops owned by Sudanese individuals.

Security forces reported that they had fired warning shots to prevent shop looting as the unrest extended in Juba and other towns across the country.

The riots erupted after reports surfaced regarding the alleged killing of 29 South Sudanese citizens by the army and allied groups in neighboring Sudan earlier in the week.

On Friday, numerous shops in various parts of Juba were closed as security forces worked to move Sudanese individuals to safer locations due to concerns about potential attacks by rioters.

South Sudan is home to several hundred thousand refugees from Sudan who have escaped the ongoing civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in their country.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has urged calm, asking citizens to resist letting their anger lead them against Sudanese traders and refugees.

According to police officials, the daily curfew running from 6 PM to 6 AM will remain in effect until further notice as part of efforts to restore security and protect property.

South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, is the world’s newest nation.
