A tragic incident in Ogun has led to the killing of an elderly woman, accused of transforming from a bird to a human, highlighting the dangers of superstition and violence in some communities.

Kehinde Ojo, an elderly woman, tragically lost her life in the Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday after a mob accused her of witchcraft.

The horrific event has ignited public anger and demands to put a stop to violence driven by superstition.

Videos circulating on social media depict a frail woman lying helplessly in a pit, enduring appalling treatment. Witnesses assert that she was accused of transforming from a bird into a human during the day.

According to reports, a prophetess from a local white garment church raised an alarm, claiming that during prayers, the woman transformed from a bird into a human and landed on the roof of her church.

In a video, the prophetess—whose identity is still unknown—appears questioning the elderly woman alongside other members of the community.

Although personnel from the Ogun State Police Command tried to save Ojo and took her swiftly to a hospital, she ultimately passed away due to her injuries.

Kabir Kehinde, a child of the deceased, recounted the incident and attributed his mother’s death to the prophetess and her son.

“My mother wasn’t a witch; she was falsely accused and beaten to death by the prophetess,” he said. “On Monday evening, while visiting my brother who lives behind the church, she lost her way due to her sight problems.”

“The prophetess and others assaulted her continuously from Monday evening until Tuesday morning. Even though she repeatedly declared her innocence, they continued their attack. When we buried my mother, she was still bleeding from her injuries. We have filed a report with the police, leading to the arrest of the prophetess.”

Attempts to reach Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Police, for updates were unsuccessful.
