Buhari will take part in the 36th AU summit in Addis Abeba

President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Abuja on Thursday and head to Addis Abeba, Ethiopia (AU), to attend the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

The theme of the summit is “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation.”

Three high-level meetings on climate change, the political situation in some West African countries, and peace and security will be attended by the president.

First up is a meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of Heads of State and Government on the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (AUPSC High Level AU), which will be presided over by the President of South Africa in his capacity as the Council’s Chair for the month of February.

The second event is a meeting of the Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), which is currently being led by the President of the Niger Republic.

President Buhari will additionally attend an exceptional summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS on the sidelines of the AU’s annual meetings.

At the summit’s inaugural session, which brings together leaders from AU member nations as well as a handful of non-AU nations and international organisations accredited to the AU in Addis Abeba, the Nigerian leader will speak and present his country’s national statement.

Several ministers and other senior government officials will travel with President Buhari on the trip.

On February 20, he will make his way back to Abuja.
