Adefunke Adeyemi Re-Elected as AfCAC Secretary General

Adefunke Adeyemi has been re-elected as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AfCAC), continuing her leadership in advancing Africa’s aviation sector. 

At the 35th Ordinary Plenary Session in Brazzaville, Congo, Adefunke Adeyemi was re-elected as the Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC).

Tunde Moshood, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Aviation Minister, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

He mentioned that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, attended the ongoing conference in Congo Brazzaville and played a significant role in her re-election.

Moshood observed that the Minister led key diplomatic efforts with African Union member states, garnering backing for Adeyemi’s candidacy.

“This victory represents a significant achievement not only for Nigeria but for the whole African aviation industry,” stated Festus Keyamo, SAN following the election.

Under Adeyemi’s exceptional leadership and innovative vision, AFCAC is poised to achieve transformative progress throughout the continent. Nigeria remains dedicated to advancing AfCAC’s objectives and ensuring the realization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).

Nigeria’s Adefunke Adeyemi has been re-elected as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), supported strongly by Nigeria’s aviation minister.

Once more asserting its prominence in African aviation, Nigeria celebrated the re-election of Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC). Announced today at the 35th Ordinary Plenary Session in Brazzaville, Congo, Ms. Adeyemi secured her position with a decisive vote count: 22 members supported her candidacy while seven opposed it. This strong endorsement underscores AFCAC member States’ trust in her innovative leadership and notable accomplishments.

A key factor in this success was the significant contribution of Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN. Currently attending a conference in Congo Brazzaville, the Minister led strategic diplomatic initiatives with African Union member states to garner support for Ms. Adeyemi’s candidacy. To promote transparency and fairness, an Election Commission was formed in line with AFCAC’s Rules of Procedure for Plenary Meetings. This commission, consisting of representatives from different African Union regions, maintained a strict process. Nigeria, led by Minister Keyamo, played a crucial role within the West African bloc and gained significant support across the continent.

As the designated agency of the African Union, AfCAC is responsible for managing civil aviation issues throughout Africa and acts as the implementing body for the Yamassoukro Decision (YD).
