2027: Atiku, Obi Address Speculations on Joint Presidential Bid
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi respond to growing speculations about a possible joint presidential ticket for the 2027 elections, hinting at their political plans.
The teams of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have denied speculation about forming a joint ticket for the 2027 presidential election.
Social media buzzed with speculation after photos of Atiku hosting Obi for breakfast at his residence in Adamawa State went viral.
Atiku later posted a video of the meeting on his official X account, with the caption: “Having breakfast with my friend #PeterObi in the ‘land of beauty.’”
The video depicted the two leaders sitting at a dining table with several others, getting ready to share a meal.
This interaction follows several months after Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Spokesman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), mentioned during a live political program that prominent opposition leaders—Atiku, Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party—were considering forming an alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
In response to the viral posts, Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, explained that the meeting was merely a gathering of longtime friends.

“Let’s not rush to conclusions. The truth is that Obi agreed to serve as the keynote speaker for AUN’s 20th anniversary and its 16th Founder’s Day, marking a significant milestone. He was an integral part of this celebration. Since Atiku Abubakar founded the university, he acted more like Obi’s host during this event; however, some interpret their connection politically. We understand our friendships well—the fact remains politics cannot come between true friends,” Ibe clarified.
He mentioned that the breakfast was an informal get-together before they went on to attend the event.
In a similar vein, Ibrahim Umar, the media aide for Obi, denied allegations that the breakfast meeting suggested a joint ticket for 2027.
“It’s amusing to think that Nigerians would consistently attribute a political motive to every gathering involving prominent party figures like these two. In reality, there was no such implication here. They merely invited Obi to give a speech; it had nothing to do with politics. Naturally, people tend to make assumptions,” Umar stated.
Even with the denials, talk of a potential alliance between the two prominent politicians continues to capture public interest.
