For expedited infrastructure development and national economic growth, Borno Governor Babagana Zulum has asked for the support of local engineering firms.

Zulum called for action on Tuesday in Abuja at the Council for Regulatory of Engineering in Nigeria’s (COREN) 31st Engineering Assembly.

They ought to be given more chances to carry out infrastructure projects in the nation, he added.

The governor also urged governments at all levels to assist local engineers in the development of the nation’s infrastructure.

Zulum said, “We should cooperate with local content orders and make sure that our engineers can handle all locally created products, or at least 90% of them.

He claims that while there are excellent engineers in Nigeria, there aren’t enough opportunities to take advantage of them.

According to him, Borno is one of the few states that supports indigenous businesses, and many of its infrastructure projects were planned and carried out by native engineers.

In order to support a measure on local content engineering, he urged the council to work with the National Assembly.

The Federal Government’s decision to stop supporting professional groups in 2019 was hailed as a positive development earlier by COREN President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar.

He believed that the funding withdrawal would improve professional organisations’ ability to function.

“COREN is not a professional association, but a regulatory organisation that performs governmental function of protecting the general public,” added Abubakar.
