A Nigerian court has ordered the remand of a woman accused of killing her daughter using rat poison. Investigations continue into the shocking incident.
On Thursday, a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State ordered the detention of 30-year-old Mercy Michael in a correctional facility. She is accused of allegedly killing her daughter using rat poison.
Michael was charged with culpable homicide by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in violation of Section 189 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
The NSCDC prosecutor, Mr. Marcus Audu, told the court that on December 11, Godfrey Sunday from Fadia Bakut in Zonkwa reported the incident to the Corps’ office.
Audu reported that on December 10, the defendant allegedly gave her eight-month-old daughter rat poison for reasons not yet clarified.
