WAEC introduces an early resit exam option for candidates seeking faster opportunities to improve their results. Find out how this impacts students.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has launched an innovative program enabling students to retake their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers as early as January and February 2025.

In the past, candidates needed to wait for the upcoming private exam cycle to retake their exams. However, with the introduction of a new program called WASSCE PC1, students now have a faster chance to improve their grades and advance their academic opportunities.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on December 31, John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs for WAEC, stated that the initiative demonstrates WAEC’s dedication to meeting the academic needs of students throughout the region.

“The program aims to provide students with a quicker way to improve their results and advance their academic or career goals,” Kapi stated.

Mr. Kapi stated, “Students who check their results now and find that they need to retake one or two exams have until January 8th to register online through our website or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés. The examinations are scheduled from January 24th to February 15th, 2025.”

He stated that to assist candidates with their preparations, WAEC intends to speed up the release of chief examiners’ reports. He noted, “These reports will offer detailed insights on areas where students may have made mistakes and provide guidance on improving their study methods and examination approach.”

Mr. Kapi added, “We have widely promoted this program through banners, our website, and our results checker platform to ensure that both students and parents are informed.”

He stated that students whose results have been canceled are still eligible to take the WASSCE PC1 exams, as long as they have not received a multi-year ban due to malpractice.

Currently, the exams will take place in regional capitals because of the small number of candidates. Prospective participants are encouraged to register by January 8th to seize this opportunity.

Nevertheless, WAEC conveyed optimism that this initiative will enable candidates to swiftly enhance their grades and qualify for the upcoming admissions cycle, thereby preventing a year-long delay in their academic progress.
