TUC on the delay in meeting demands: “We’re sick of FG’s promises
Nigerians are sick of the federal government’s endless promises, the Trade Union Congress, or TUC, has informed them, amidst the hardships experienced throughout the nation.
The TUC’s president, Festus Osifo, stated that the union had had enough of the Ministry of Labour’s assurances that its demands would be fulfilled.
To ease the misery caused by the elimination of gasoline subsidies, the TUC had requested from the federal government pay awards for civil servants, tax exemptions for particular groups of workers, and the establishment of frameworks for the efficient execution of the palliatives.
The government would soon resolve the issue of pay awards, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, earlier assured Nigerian workers.
The minister also pleaded with the Nigeria Labour Congress to postpone their intended indefinite strike so that the government could deal with all outstanding concerns.
Osifo, however, asserted that the union is pressing for the Federal Government to take specific action.
On Tuesday, Osifo added during an appearance on Channels Television, “In the last meeting we had with the Ministry of Labour, they told us the same thing: The president was out of the country and when he comes back they believe that he will make the pronouncement.
“But I noticed this morning that he stated the announcement would come soon. However, we are really weary of hearing the word soon and want a firm announcement that will address this ongoing problem.
“At the end of the day, we have been hearing dates and assurances that something will happen today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. We are largely sick of promises and only want to see action.
Nigerians are sick of meetings and endless promises; what we want is real action, not more words.
